WOMEN LOSE TWO AT U-MASS

The New York women's basketball team lost 74-40 to UMass Boston in the first round of the 2011 UMass Boston Women’s Basketball Tip-Off tournament. As a team, UMass shot 48.5% on 33-of-68 shooting, while the defense held the Knights to just 13-of-65 shooting (20%). The Knights were led by junior forward Taisha Sherman (Vanguard/New York, NY) who scored 21 of the team’s 40 points. She was 7-of-26 from the field, which included the team’s only 3-pointer and six of their 13 made free throws. On the glass she pulled down nine boards, while fellow junior forward Kyscharece Young (St. Michael's Academy/Brooklyn, NY) recorded a game-high 10 rebounds. The Knights were outrebounded 52 to 38.

In the consolation game, the Knights would fall in an early hole they couldn't get out of, eventually falling to the College of Staten Island by a score of 72 to 56. The Knights would find themselves in a 14 point deficit at halftime, down 41 to 27. Berkeley would play much better in the second half, only being outscored by two for the half, 31 to 29.

Sherman would lead the Knights again with 22 points while also adding seven rebounds and four assists. Freshman guard Janay Thomas (Longwood/Queens, NY) would add 11 points and six rebounds and junior guard Aiyesha Brown (John Adams/Queens, NY) would chip in with nine rebounds.

The losses drop the Knights to 2-2 on the season. They return to action when they face perennial USCAA powerhouse Briarcliffe College on Saturday, November 27 at 1 P.M. on the road.
