NY WINS TWO IN A ROW

The Berkeley College New York men's basketball (#14 USCAA) snapped their two-game losing streak with an impressive 63-52 victory over #2 ranked Williamson Free School at the Prestall Sports Center in Media, PA, to improve to 4-4 on the season and then followed it up with another Hudson Valley Conference win over Culinary Institute to improve to 5-4 on the season.

Williamson (11-2), fresh off their victory last Wednesday against top-ranked Central Penn, ran into a buzzsaw as the Knights opened the game by scoring the first s
even points and never looked back. Berkeley would lead by fourteen at halftime 37-23 before Williamson would make a mild second-half run to slice the lead in half. But in a game in which they never trailed, Berkeley would respond time after time again to keep Williamson at bay and preserve a much-needed conference victory. Senior guard Jose Stable (Brooklyn, NY/EBC High School for Public Service) led all scorers with 20 points with fellow senior guard Kaseem Williams (Brooklyn, NY/Boys & Girls) adding 16 points.

The team completed the weekend sweep by defeating the visiting Steels of Culinary Institute by a final score of 105-53. Berkeley College started the game on a 39-13 run to open up a twenty six-point lead; they would not look back from there. In the final six minutes of first-half play, they would increase their lead to ov

The second half was mostly Penn College as they cut the Knights lead down to seven, 59-52 with 3:46 remaining. The Valiants certainly looked to be headed to the consolation round with under three minutes remaining, when junior guard Jovan Bovell (Jamaica/Jamaica, NY) hit a fast-break layup to put the Knights up 72-60. But the home team scored six points in 29 seconds to get back into the game to make it 72-66 with 1:55 left.

KNIGHTS FALL IN SHOOTOUT AT RPI

In the first ever meeting between the two programs, the New York men's basketball team was defeated by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 102-85 in a non-conference game in Troy, NY. Berkeley fell to 2-2 for the season with the loss.

The Knights managed to weather an initial assault of three point shots by the home team and built a six point cushion. A layup by junior center Elijah Craig (Brooklyn, NY/Seward Park) gave Berkeley a 29-23 lead with 8:42 in the first half. But the lead quickly evaporated as the RPI shooters began to find their range and the home team took a 50-43 lead into halftime.

RPI would extend their cushion to 15 points by beginning the second half on a 10-2 run before Berkeley would begin its comeback. Junior forward Danzel Whyte (Brooklyn, NY/Teachers Prep) converted two free throws to cut the margin to 13, then a steal by senior guard Kaseem Williams (Brooklyn, NY/Boys & Girls) turned into a three-point play to slice the deficit to 60-50. Following a missed RPI shot, senior forward Jose Stable (Brooklyn, NY/EBC High School) fed a pretty pass to Craig for a dunk to trim the lead to eight. Stable then stole the ball on the next RPI possession for a layup to end the 9-0 Berkeley run to cut the lead to six at 60-54. Berkeley managed to keep within single digits for most of the second half but free throws down the line would extend RPI's margin of victory to double digits.

Williams led all Berkeley scorers with 28 points while adding three assists and three steals. Stable added 25 points while pulling down 16 rebounds and dishing out six assists. Craig notched his second double-double of the season with 10 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks. Whyte also was a force inside grabbing 15 rebounds. Overall the Knights outrebounded RPI 70-58 but were plagued by a season high 33 turnovers and poor three-point shooting (1-14 overall).

Berkeley's next game will be Sunday, December 2nd at 3:00 PM at Sarah Lawrence College in an HVMAC matchup.

WOMEN LOSE FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON

The United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (1-0) upended the Knights of Berkeley College (0-1) by a score of 57-54 Saturday afternoon in Kings Point, NY.
Berkeley controlled play early, never relinquishing their lead in the first half, leading at the half 28-26. Berkeley came out firing in the second, scoring seven of the half's first nine points to open up a seven point in lead in the first five minutes of play. Capitalizing on Berkeley turnovers, the Mariners slowly began to chip away at the deficit before taking the lead late in the game.
On their final chance down the floor, Berkeley junior forward Milan Germany (Bronx, NY) heaved a potential game-tying three pointer at the buzzer from the top of the arc that looked as though it had a chance of dropping; only to spin around the hoop and rim out, giving Merchant Marine the 57-54 victory.

With under three minutes to play, the Knights were deep in the Dolphins' box, when freshman forward Ahmet Colak fed a ball to sophomore forward Dare Aniyikaye at the top of the box that the latter was able to bullet through the upper right hand corner tying the game at 1-1 in the 87th minute. The score would hold up to send the game into overtime despite a 28-13 edge for the Dolphins in shots taken.

In the first overtime, both teams showed some tired legs as only a total of five shots were taken. In the second and final overtime CSI was on the attack, but the Knights did not back down, going back and forth for the first five minutes. In the final five minutes of play, the Dolphins put more pressure on the Knights, tallying five shots. The Dolphins scored the game-winner with just 58 seconds left on the clock.

The Knights host Briarcliffe College on Saturday at 4 P.M. at Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn.

NY MEN'S SOCCER 2012 PREVIEW

The 2012 season promises to be a rebuilding year for Berkeley New York men's soccer. After reaching the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference final in 2009 and winning the conference championship in 2010, the 2011 season ended disappointingly with a second place regular season finish and a home loss in the conference semi-final.

Since then, the team has graduated ten seniors, of which six were starters; and lost two freshmen that combined for twenty goals in 2011 who have transfered to higher divisions, NCAA Division II Mercy College and Canada's Acadia University. Still, there is a strong core of 12 returning players, 7 of whom have a conference championship plaque in their trophy case.

Junior goalkeeper Camilo Montes (Bayside/Bayside, NY) will be protected by Guillermo Moscoso (Long Island City/Long Island, NY), an outside defender and the teams 2011 Most Improved Player. Moscoso is the sole returning senior and will aim to become the first Berkeley New York soccer player to earn four intercollegiate varsity letters. The center of the defense will be anchored by the 2010 Most Improved Player, Mamadou Diallo (Paul Robeson/Brooklyn, NY), and the outstanding third year player Waqas Afgan. Ifeanyi Ekwermuba (Canarsie/Brooklyn, NY) hopes to recover from his early season injury issues in 2011 and return to his near all-conference 2010 form.

The Knights midfield will see the most changes. Returning are junior starter Ulises Bravo (Graphic Communication Arts/New York, NY), Xhuljano Shala, and freshman standout Joachim Moe. Ibahima Ndayie is sure to make a huge impact on the flanks after enjoying a fruitful second half of the 2011 season. Lucas Pucheta (Dr. Michael Krop/Miami, FL) is also returning after an injury prone season that saw him miss the last part of the season.

"I am excited about the recruits we have secured for the 2012 season as I believe they will strengthen our midfield from which most of our offense is generated," said fourth year head coach Stavros Zomopoulos.

At the top Berkeley will depend heavily on the finishing prowess of Dare Aniyikaye. His explosive skill is expected to propel him towards the top of the conference scoring charts.

The eighteen game 2012 schedule promises to be a tough one. It opens at Fairleigh Dickinson University at Florham on August 31st and features three of last year's USCAA Top 20; Maine-Fort Kent, Briarcliffe College, and SUNY ESF. It also incudes two 2011 NCAA Division III tournament participants (the CUNY and Skyline Champions) Lehman College and SUNY-Maritime.

"We are accustomed to such a tough schedule as we have consistently played one of the most difficult schedules in the tri-state area for the last three years. Our teams prefer to compete against the best," said Zomopoulos.

LONIAKAN NAMED TO ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

Sophomore shooting guard Alexander Loniakan (Frolunda Sweden/New York, NY) earned a place on the Hudson Valley Men’s Athletic Conference 2012 Winter/Spring All-Academic Team, which was announced earlier today.

Instituted last season, the All-Academic Team recognizes excellence both in the field of play and in the classroom. The All-Academic Team consists of student-athletes who have reached sophomore academic standing and have earned a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or better at the conclusion of the spring semester, and participate in one of the conference’s winter and spring sports – basketball, tennis and volleyball.

NJ MEN'S SOCCER HAS EYES SET ON NORTH CAROLINA

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's soccer team enters the 2012 season with aspirations of competing for a playoff spot at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Tournament in North Carolina. A learning curve in 2011 with ten starting freshmen that managed to still secure six wins should help this young, talented group reach its goals in 2012.

"We developed a solid foundation last year," said fourth-year coach Bruno Ferreira, "and we've added some important pieces to the roster this year. By all indications, we should be prepared to have a successful season."

If they are to do so, they will have to overcome a very strong schedule. This season alone the Knights will square off against fourteen NCAA Division III programs including Drew University, Medgar Evers College, The College of New Jersey, and Albright College to name a few.

"We like the tough schedule," says Ferreira. "You have to earn your wins here at Berkeley. We want to play the best."

The team will also host home games for the first time in their brief history, with five matches being played at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

"The home games are important and a natural evolution of our athletic programs," said Athletic Director Brian Maher. "We are looking forward to seeing our students, friends, and families come out and support the team this season."

The team will be led by returning sophomore goal keeper and team captain Thomas Frangieh (Newton/Newton, NJ) who was off to a stellar rookie season before a leg injury sidelined him for the second half. Leading the defense are sophomore co-captain Raymond Scalfani (Parsippany/Lake Hiawatha, NJ) and fellow sophomores Veton Tela (Eastside/Paterson, NJ) and Dan Freitas (Kearny/Kearny, NJ).
In the midfield there is a deep core of talent. Tactic-savy sophomore Nuno Santos (Kearny/Kearny, NJ) is a bruising center defensive mid alongside two explosive playmakers in Eurcario Solano (Absegami/Galloway, NJ) and Ramon Arce (Bernards/Bernardsville, NJ).

The team also returns Academic All-American junior defender Paul Logan (Kearny/Kearny, NJ), junior midfielder Jason Rodrigues (Kearny/Kearny, NJ), junior forward Johnny Campos (Kearny/Kearny, NJ) and sophomore forward Daniel Vieceli (Kearny/Kearny, NJ).

"We are deep and talented at every position," says coach Ferreira. "The season's success could possibly come down to one goal so we must be at the top of our game every night."

The Knights open the season at Utica College on August 31 at 7 P.M.

KNIGHTS FALL IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

The Berkeley College New York men's basketball team fell short in their bid to earn their first national championship, falling for the second straight year to Andrews University who have now won consecutive national championships.

Despite holding a 39-33 lead at halftime, the Knights were outscored 39-19 in the second half to fall 72-58 to the Cardinals. Turnovers cost the Knights as they committed 26 to the Cardinals 6. The Cardinals would earn 25 points off of those turnovers to the Knights 8.

The Knights were led by Jose Stable who had 17 points and 9 rebounds and Danzel Whyte who added 10 points. The Knights finish the season at 20-9, their best season ever. Congratulations Knights on a wonderful season!
