New York women's basketball wins NHTI Holiday Inn New Years Tournament this past weekend

The Berkeley College of New York women's basketball team continued to roll this past weekend, winning their sixth and seventh games of the 2013-2014 by defeating the University of Maine-Augusta and Massasoit Community College on back-to-back days to win the NHTI Holiday Inn New Years Tournament. With the victories, the Knights improved to a record of 7-2 on the season. The games took place in Concord, New Hampshire, on the campus of NHTI.

On Saturday afternoon, Berkeley College punched their ticket to the championship game of the tournament with a hard-fought 61-55 victory over THE Moose of the University of Maine-Augusta. In that win, the Knights were led by the outstanding performance of Milan Germany who posted a double-double with game highs in points with 25 (on 11-of-18 shooting) and rebounds with 12. She also tallied four steals and swatted three shots. Janay Thomas contributed 10 points and seven assists, and Aiyesha Brown finished her afternoon with 12 points and five rebounds.

The Knights struggled mightily in the first half with their shot, hitting on just 10-of-36 attempts in the opening session (27.8 percent). The second half proved to be a different story for Berkeley, as the Knights drained 16 of their 26 shots (61.5 percent) to make life difficult for the Moose. The Knights out-rebounded the University of Maine-Augusta 38-22, while also recording 11 steals to seven for the Moose.

Despite the loss for the Moose who only dressed five players, it was Jamie Plummer leading the way for her squad with 20 points (6-of-10 from the floor, seven-of-nine from the charity stripe) to go along with three assists and three rebounds. Arreonte Lee added 17 points and six rebounds, as well.

The following day pitted the Knights against the Warriors of Massasoit Community College, who a day earlier had defeated NHTI in the tournament's opening round. Berkeley College took complete control of the contest with the Warriors, taking a 38-17 lead into the locker room at the half, before eventually going on to win the game by a score of 65-49.

In the Knights' victory over Massasoit Community College, it was Patricia Patterson leading all scorers for the game with 17 points. She also snatched a game-high 15 rebounds (including five on the offensive glass) and dished two assists. Germany also had a double-double, netting 11 points and pulling down 14 boards, and Thomas scored 12 points while grabbing six rebounds.

Despite the loss for the Warriors, Marina Palladino scored 15 points, snatched five rebounds and dished four assists. Ashley Andrade helped with 12 points, eight rebounds, and three steals, and Fredi Lawson finished her afternoon with 11 points and nine rebounds.

Berkeley College has now won six of their last seven games and will return to action on Tuesday evening, as the Knights will take on the Blue Angels of the College of New Rochelle in a Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest in New Rochelle, NY. Start-time for the contest is scheduled for 7:00pm.
