TEAMS SPLIT AT ALBANY

The New York men's and women's basketball teams split this weekend at Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.

The women got the day started and gave the defending champion Panthers a run for their money in the first half before a 10-2 run to end the half gave Albany a 34-24 lead going into the break. The Knights would fail to get it under 10 points the rest of the way before falling 76-60 to fall to 2-2 in Conference play and 11-8 on the season.

Junior guard Rachel Thomas (Murry Bergtraum/Brooklyn, NY) would lead all scorers with 18 points and would chip in 8 rebounds to lead the Knights.

The men's team would continue their late season surge with a 100-63 win over the Panthers in the second game to improve to 12-7 on the season and 4-0 in the Conference. They have now won three of their last four.

The Knights would lead a balanced attack with ten players scoring with four in double figures. Junior guard Kaseem Williams (Boys and Girls/Brooklyn, NY) would lead the Knights with 22 points and seven steals with sophomore guard Mario Guzman (West Oaks Academy/New York, NY) adding 18 points from the bench including 3 for 3 from three-point range. Overall the Knights would go 11 for 20 from the three-point range.

MEN LOSE TO CENTRAL PENN

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's basketball team fell to Central Penn College on Saturday 101-88 to fall to 5-12 on the season. It was the second time the teams met with Central Penn defeating the Knights in New Jersey 93-77.

The Knights are back in action this Thursday against the College of Staten Island.

NJ LOSES TO DEL VAL 96-80

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's basketball team lost to Delaware Valley College 96-80 Monday night to fall to 5-11 on the season.

A Gary Williams, Jr. (Marist/Jersey City, NJ) trey gave the Knights a 23-22 advantage with 5:13 remaining in the first half before Delaware Valley responded by outscoring Berkeley, 19-8, the rest of the way to take a 10-point advantage into the break.

Delaware Valley upped the lead to 16 midway through the second stanza, but the Knights would not go away and a Daniel Waynick (Hightstown/East Windsor, NJ) layup made it a 75-66 ballgame with 6:04 on the clock. The Aggies scored eight of the next 12, but Berkeley responded with five straight to pull to within eight, 83-75, with 3:09 remaining. Delaware Valley finally put the game out of reach by scoring nine of their next 11 points at the free throw line where they enjoyed an eye-opening 49 to 19 free throw attempt advantage. Delaware would outscore the Knights 37 to 13 at the free throw line.

Despite the loss, Waynick was outstanding in defeat for Berkeley as he was 11-for-14 from the field and 9-for-11 from the foul line for 31 points. He also added seven rebounds in 38 minutes of action. Terah Mingo (Kearny Christian Academy/Newark, NJ) added a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards.

KNIGHTS SPLIT WITH BEARS

The Berkeley College Knights split a doubleheader against the St. Joseph's College Bears on Saturday with the men winning the opening game before the women fell in the night cap.

Both games were extremely close despite large leads being held by both Knights squads in the second half.

The men led by as many as 20 points in the second half and by 14 with only four minutes remaining before the Bears went on a 13-2 run to close the gap to three, 83-80. The Knights, however, would clamp down and hold the Bears without a field goal for the remainder of the game while taking advantage of a turnover for a breakaway slam dunk to seal the win.

The men were led by All-Americans Jose Stable (EBC for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) and Elijah Craig (Seward Park/Brookyn, NY), who led the Knights with 26 points and 11 rebounds and 18 points and 14 rebounds, respectively. Craig also added 4 blocks. The win improved the Knights' record to 11-7 on the season and 3-0 in the Conference.

The women got off to a slow start but still led 9-2 early in a game of runs. They would go into the half up 35-34 despite multiple players being in foul trouble early. They would extend their lead to seven early in the second half before a 19-5 run by the Bears put them down seven themselves. Another run by Berkeley would tie the game at 58 and the game would remain close until the final minute before the Bears would pull away for a 76-68 win.

The Bears would enjoy an enormous advantage at the free throw line that would mean the difference in the game shooting 46 free throws to Berkeley's 15. The Bears would convert 30 to the Knights 10 for a 20 point differential. The Knights were led by junior forward Janay Collins (The Bronx Guild/Bronx, NY) with 20 points and 15 rebounds and junior forward Taisha Sherman (Vanguard/New York, NY) with 17 points and six assists.

The loss dropped the Knights record to 11-7 and 2-1 in the Conference.

Both teams play another doubleheader next Saturday at Albany Pharmacy with the women at 1 P.M. and the men at 3 P.M.

NEW JERSEY WINS TWO IN A ROW

The Berkeley College New Jersey men's basketball team has won two in a row to improve to 5-10 on the season.

The Knights defeated Penn State-Scranton 90-82 and Vaughn College 66-53 and now face Delaware Valley on Monday hoping to extend the streak to three.

The 5 wins are the most in a season for the New Jersey program and the win over Vaughn was the first home victory for the Knights who started hosting home games this season. They are now 1-2 at home.

Freshman guard Daniel Infante (Union City/Union City, NJ) led the Knights with 13 points including three three pointers to help seal the win for the Knights. Freshman forward Daniel Waynick contributed 13 points as well for the Knights.

WOMEN DEFEAT BARBER-SCOTIA

The Berkeley College New York women's basketball team is on a roll having won four in a row and nine of their last ten after defeating Barber-Scotia College 67 to 57 today at the Martin Luther King Classic in Newport News, VA. The win improves the team's record to 11-5.

The Knights were led by junior forward Taisha Sherman (Vanguard/New York, NY) and junior guard Aiyesha Brown (John Adams/Jamaica, NY) who led all scorers with 19 points a piece. Junior forward Janay Collins (The Bronx Guild/Bronx, NY) had her second double-double of the Classic with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

The Knights now face The Apprentice School on Sunday while looking to sweep the Classic.

WOMEN DEFEAT #3 RANKED BRIARCLIFFE

The Berkeley College New York women's basketball team defeated #3 ranked Briarcliffe College this evening at the Martin Luther King Classic in Newport News, VA, by a score of 67-66.

The win improves the team's record to 10-5 having won 8 of their last 9 games.

The Knights were led by junior forward Janay Collins (The Bronx Guild/Bronx, NY) with 13 points and 17 rebounds in only 29 minutes of play. Four other players would reach double figures in points, with junior guard Aiyesha Brown (John Adams/Jamaica, NY) with 15, and sophomore center Rahinet Koti (Walton/Bronx, NY) and freshman guard Janay Thomas (Longwood/Queens, NY) each scoring 11.

The Knights would shoot 72% from the free throw line and outrebound Briarcliffe 47 to 41 while shooting 42% from the field compared to Briarcliffe's 33%. The Knights bench would outscore Briarcliffe 39 to 17 for the game.

The Knights face Barber-Scotia College tomorrow at 2 P.M.

WOMEN WIN CHAMPIONSHIP

The New York women's basketball team defeated University of Maine-Augusta and then host New Hampshire Technical Institute to win the NHTI Delta Dental New Year's Tournament in Concord, NH.

The women defeated UM-Augusta by a score of 61-54 and then NHTI by a score of 90-71 to earn their second tournament championship of the season.

Junior forward Taisha Sherman (Vanguard/New York, NY) was named Most Valuable Player for the tournament and junior forward Janay Collins (The Bronx Guild/Bronx, NY) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The wins improved the team's record to 9-5 and the team moved up three spots to number nine in the latest USCAA national rankings.

KNIGHTS MEN AND WOMEN ADVANCE TO CHAMPIONSHIP

Berkeley College's New York men's and women's basketball teams advanced to the championship game of the NHTI Delta Dental New Year's Tournament with victories over the University of Maine-Augusta.

The men won 91-59 behind sophomore Jose Stable (EBC High School/Brooklyn, NY), who scored a team-high 21 points with fellow sophomore Mario Guzman ( West Oaks Acacedmy/New York, NY) and junior Kaseem Williams (Boys & Girls/Brooklyn) each adding 13 points. Stable controlled the boards with 13 rebounds.

The Knights (9-5) shot only 38% in the first half and led only by five 37-32 at halftime, but opened the second half on a 13-2 run to expand the lead to 16 at 50-34. UMA would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way as the Knights shot 53% in the second half to cruise to the victory.

The women won 61-54 despite missing starting junior point guard Aiyesha Brown (John Adams/Jamaica, NY) to improve their record to 8-5.

The men and women will play host NHTI in the championship games at 12:30 P.M. and 4 P.M., respectively.

KNIGHTS IN CHAMPIONSHIP

The New York men's basketball team defeated DeSales University in the first round of the Red Robin Holiday Tournament at DeSales to advance to the championship game of the tournament.

To get there the Knights would have to overcome a three pointer at the buzzer in regulation by the Bulldogs to send the game into overtime. In the overtime Berkeley would score the first six points and never look back in securing an 83-77 upset win over the Bulldogs. It is the first time DeSales (4-6) will play in the consolation game of its Holiday Tournament which started in 2001-02. The Bulldogs will take on SUNY-Potsdam (4-6) who fell to Alvernia University (7-3), 60-56, in the other opening round game on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.

The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead on the very first possession of the game on a three-pointer, but from that point forward it was all Berkeley (8-4) except for a late rally at the end of the second half. The Knights used an 11-1 run over the next five minutes to lead, 11-4, and extended that advantage to as many as 16 points (37-21) in the first half. DeSales scored six straight points late in the half to pull within 10, before settling for a 12-points deficit (39-27) at the break. The Bulldogs shot just 37.0 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes as compared to 53.8 percent shooting for the Knights.

The second-half saw the Bulldogs chip away at the lead on several occasions, but each time Berkeley had the answer. The Bulldogs got within five (39-34) early in the half but a three from junior guard Kaseem Williams (Boys and Girls/Brooklyn, NY) and five straight points from sophomore forward Jose Stable (EBC for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) pushed the lead back to 11 points with 12:57 left.

The overtime period quickly went Berkeley's way as the Knights scored six straight points to take a 74-68 lead and DeSales was never able to get within one possession on the scoreboard, eventually falling by six. Berkeley got 29 points and seven rebounds from Stable, 25 points, eight rebounds, and six assists from Williams, and 12 points, 14 rebounds, and five blocks from sophomore center Elijah Craig (Seward Park/Brooklyn, NY).

WOMEN EXTEND STREAK TO FIVE

The Berkeley College New York women's basketball team improved their record to 7-4 with a dominating win over Yeshiva University, 78-35. The win extended the Knights win streak to five games after a 2-4 start.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead by opening the game with a 14-0 run before Yeshiva put two on the scoreboard. The Knights would continue to dominate in the first half, heading into the break up 45-13.

The Knights received contributions from all eleven players with each scoring at least two points. Leading the Knights were junior guard Savasia Caraballo (John F. Kennedy/Bronx, NY) and sophomore center Rahinet Koti (Walton/Bronx, NY) each with 14 points. Koti would finish with a double-double with 14 rebounds as well.

The Knights return to action January 4 against Arcadia University.

BERKELEY DEFEATS RUTGERS

Junior guard Gary Williams Jr. (Jersey City, NJ/Marist) put back the rebound of his teammate’s missed shot as the final buzzer sounded to lift the Berkeley College men’s basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 64-62, to earn Berkeley's first win ever over a member of the New Jersey Athletic Conference. The victory was the second straight for the Knights, lifting their record to 3-7. The Scarlet Raptors fall to 2-6.

After building a 32-28 halftime lead, the Knights increased their bulge to as many as 11 points midway through the second half, leading 50-39 with 13:52 remaining on a layup by freshman guard Davonn Boyd (Newark, NJ/Kearny Christian Academy).

Rutgers-Camden, however, started chipping away, aided by 10 points from sophomore guard Woody Redding (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast Catholic) – eight from the foul line – and three field goals from junior guard Bruce Stephens (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee). Redding, who was 14-for-17 from the foul line on his way to a game-high 22 points, tied the score at 62-62 with 18.2 seconds remaining on the first end of a pair of foul shots, but missed the second shot. Boyd grabbed the rebound and the Knights called a timeout with 12.8 seconds remaining to set up the final play.
With the clock ticking down toward a potential overtime, sophomore guard Andrew Webber (Columbus, OH/Thomas Worthington) missed a jumper, but Williams streaked into the paint to grab the rebound and put it back for the winning shot at the buzzer.

The Scarlet Raptors held an early 12-6 lead before the Knights fought back, finally taking the lead at 18-16 on a layup by Webber. Berkeley increased its lead to as many as six points (28-22 and 32-26) before settling for a 32-28 halftime lead. They held the lead until the Raptors tied the game at 62-62 moments before the frantic finish.

Waynick and Williams Jr. each finished with 15 points to pace the Knights, while Webber and sophomore center Terah Mingo (Newark, NJ/Kearny Christian Academy) both added eight points. Webber also dished out a game-high five assists and led the Knights with seven rebounds, while Mingo and Boyd each added six boards. Freshman guard Dakwan Simmons (Newark, NJ/University) had a team-high five steals for Berkeley.

Berkeley shot 21-for-47 (44.7 percent) from the field overall, including 17-for-25 (68.0) from the foul line. The Knights also had a 33-31 advantage off the boards and held Rutgers-Camden to 39.2 percent shooting (20-for-51) from the floor.

The Knights return to action Dec. 29 facing the host team on the first day of the Albright College Holiday Tournament.

WOMEN WIN FOUR IN A ROW

The New York women's basketball team defeated conference opponent Vaughn College 101-11 to improve to 6-4 on the season and 2-0 in the conference and extend their winning streak to four games.

The Knights will finish out 2011 with a game against Yeshiva University on Wednesday, December 21 at Baruch College at 8 P.M.

NJ SPLITS AGAIN AT ROWAN TOURNAMENT

For the fourth consecutive year, the New Jersey men's basketball team defeated Penn State Brandywine in the consolation game of the Heritage's Dairy Stores Classic.

The Knights lost in the first round in a close game against Widener University, 95-82, despite seeing five different players reach double figures in scoring. Freshman forward Daniel Waynick (Hightstown/East Windsor, NJ) scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards to lead the Knights. Guards Devante Chang (Irvington/Newark, NJ) and Andrew Webber (Thomas Worthington/Columbus, OH) collected 16 and 15 points respectively. Chang also produced six rebounds and four assists. Junior guard Gary Williams (Marist/Jersey City, NJ) registered 13 points and freshman forward Davonn Boyd (Kearny Christian Academy/Newark, NJ) followed with 10.

In the consolation game, the Knights would have to play two overtimes to defeat Penn State by a score of 88-87. Berkeley (2-7) was led by sophomore center Terah Mingo (Kearny Christian Academy/Newark, NJ) with game-highs of 26 points and 15 rebounds. Webber contributed with 20 points, four boards, and five assists and was named to the All-Tournament Team. Boyd ended the game with 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Knights head to Rutgers-Camden on Thursday for a 7 P.M. game.

NY LOSES CLOSE CONTEST

The New York men's basketball team's three game win streak came to an end on Saturday in a tough non-conference loss to Western New England College.

Western New England (4-4) jumped out to an early 13-point lead in the first half before the Knights (6-4) responded with a 15-6 run to end the half down 27-23.

The Knights would open up the second half with a 5-0 run to take their only lead of the game and the game would be close for most of the second half with no team holding more than a six-point lead until 2:26 remained in the game. Western New England would seal the game at the free throw line, making 17 of 20 attempts from the charity stripe.

The Knights were led by sophomore forward Jose Stable (EBC for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) who led all scorers with 24 points and 18 rebounds. Only two Knights would end up in double figures for the game. Both teams would shoot less than 40% from the field for the game.

WOMEN WIN CONFERENCE OPENER

Every time the New York women's basketball team wins, they are setting a new record for the program. The team continued their amazing success this season by defeating Hudson Valley opponent, College of New Rochelle, 75 to 71, to extend their longest winning streak to three games and improve their record to (5-4, 1-0) on the season.

Having won only two games in their inaugural season last year, the Knights have not only eclipsed their historical win total so far, but have also secured their first tournament championship, and have a three-game winning streak this season as well.

Both teams came out with a fast pace and high energy style of play that entertained the Wellness Center crowd with both playing an up tempo style that prevented either team from taking control of the game. The biggest lead of the first half was seven held by Berkeley with five minutes to go in the first half.

CNR quickly erased that lead with a 10-3 run by the Blue Angels and tied the game up at 33 with a minute to go. Berkeley would end the half up 38-35.

In the second half, CNR came out and took control of the game to take a 56-47 lead. The Blue Angels could not hold the lead as the size of Berkeley took over. Berkeley out rebounded CNR 61-41 including 34 offensive rebounds that led to 19 second chance points. A jumper by junior guard Rachel Thomas (Murry Bergtraum/Brooklyn, NY) off of an offensive rebound from sophomore center Rahinet Koti (Walton/Bronx, NY) gave Berkeley the lead with two minutes to go in the game.

The Knights were led by junior guard Aiyesha Brown (John Adams/Jamaica, NY) with 31 points and 5 assists and Thomas with 23 points.

WOMEN WIN DR. SHABAZZ TOURNAMENT

The New York women's basketball team won the 13th Annual Dr. Betty Shabazz basketball tournament at Medgar Evers College this past weekend.

Led by tournament MVP Taisha Sherman and All-Tournament selection Aiyesha Brown, the Knights defeated Yeshiva University in the first game 80-51 and then College of New Rochelle in the championship game 80-60 to secure their first tournament championship in program history.

The wins improve the Knights record to 4-4 on the season.

Junior forward Sherman (Vanguard/New York, NY) led all scorers with 23 points against Yeshiva and 19 against College of New Rochelle. Junior guard Brown (John Adams/Jamaica, NY) had her best game of the young season in the championship, dropping 23 points and 5 assists to secure the trophy.

The Knights return to action this Wednesday against Vaughn College.

WOMEN LOSE TO BRIARCLIFFE

NY MEN SPLIT AT HAMILTON

Sophomore forward Jose Stable (EBC High School/Brooklyn, NY) posted a game-high 28 points and 16 rebounds to power Berkeley College (NY) to an 89-73 victory over SUNY Cobleskill in the consolation game of the Hamilton College Thanksgiving Tournament to improve to 4-3 on the season.

Stable was 11 of 15 from the floor, and led the Knights with seven assists and was also named to the All-Tournament Team. Junior guard Kaseem Williams ( Boys & Girls/Brooklyn , NY ) chipped in 22 points and seven boards, and sophomore guard Jovan Bovell (Jamaica/Jamaica, NY) added 15 points and five assists. Sophomore center Elijah Craig (Seward Park/Brooklyn, NY) pulled down 13 rebounds.

The Knights shot 57 percent from the floor, and outrebounded the Fighting Tigers 46-20.

In the opening game, host Hamilton College defeated the Knights 86-55. There were three ties and eight lead changes through the first 14 minutes, 39 seconds as the Knights hung in with the Continentals, but a 15-3 run in the final 4:34 of the first half would lead Hamilton into the break up by 12 at 35-23. Hamilton opened the second half with a 27-6 run to put the game out reach.

Berkeley would get no closer than 22 the rest of the way. Stable paced the Knights with a game-high 21 points and 15 rebounds to go along with a team-high three assists while Williams added 15 points and a game-high three steals.

NJ FALLS TO MONTCLAIR

Despite putting a scare into the Red Hawks in the first half that saw Montclair clinging to a slim 24 to 18 lead heading into halftime, the New Jersey men's basketball team could not maintain the momentum in the second half, falling to Montclair by a score of 77-53 to fall to 1-5 on the season.

Berkeley would open the second half with a basket to cut the lead to 24-20, but that would be as close as the Knights would come the rest of the way. The Red Hawks would go on a 26-6 run that would seal the win.

Sophomore center Terah Mingo (Newark, N.J./Kearney Christian Academy) led Berkeley with 16 points and six rebounds.

The Knights next compete in the Rowan University Tournament on December 9 and 10.

SHERMAN NAMED CONFERENCE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Berkeley College New York forward, Taisha Sherman, has been selected as the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference Basketball Player of the Week for the week of November 22.

The junior from New York, NY averaged 21.5 points and eight rebounds at the UMass-Boston Tournament.

STABLE NAMED USCAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Berkeley College New York sophomore forward Jose Stable has been named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week for the week of November 22.

Jose had three outstanding games during the week combining for a total of 67 points and 24 rebounds. He shot 64% from the field and a perfect 16-16 from the free throw line. He was selected for the All-Tournament team at the New England College Tip-Off Tournament where the Knights went 1-1.

NJ LOSES TWO IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

The New Jersey men's basketball team quickly lost all the momentum they gained by beating Southern Maine CC by losing both games at the New Hampshire Technical Institute Tip-Off Tournament.

The Knights led throughout most of the game versus Dean College in the first game of the tournament before losing the lead in the final four minutes. Dean pulled away with a 79 to 71 win.

The consolation game would go even worse for the Knights, as they fell to Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences by a score of 78 to 69 to fall to 1-4 on the season. The Knights now square off against Montclair State University on Tuesday, November 22, at 6 P.M.

KNIGHTS HEAD TO HAMILTON

Berkeley will face either Cobleskill or Farmingdale State the following day, Sunday, November 27 either at 1 P.M. or 3 P.M.

WOMEN LOSE TWO AT U-MASS

The New York women's basketball team lost 74-40 to UMass Boston in the first round of the 2011 UMass Boston Women’s Basketball Tip-Off tournament. As a team, UMass shot 48.5% on 33-of-68 shooting, while the defense held the Knights to just 13-of-65 shooting (20%). The Knights were led by junior forward Taisha Sherman (Vanguard/New York, NY) who scored 21 of the team’s 40 points. She was 7-of-26 from the field, which included the team’s only 3-pointer and six of their 13 made free throws. On the glass she pulled down nine boards, while fellow junior forward Kyscharece Young (St. Michael's Academy/Brooklyn, NY) recorded a game-high 10 rebounds. The Knights were outrebounded 52 to 38.

In the consolation game, the Knights would fall in an early hole they couldn't get out of, eventually falling to the College of Staten Island by a score of 72 to 56. The Knights would find themselves in a 14 point deficit at halftime, down 41 to 27. Berkeley would play much better in the second half, only being outscored by two for the half, 31 to 29.

The New York men's basketball team lost the first game of the New England College Tip-Off Tournament at Henniker, New Hampshire, falling to Lesley University by a score of 70 to 67. Lesley overcame a 39-31 hafltime deficit and outscored the Knights by 11 in the second half, much like Lehman College did earlier in the week when the Lightning overcame a 17-point deficit to the Knights. Sophomore forward Jose Stable (EBC for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) and junior guard Kaseem Williams (Boys and Girls/Brooklyn, NY) led all players with 19 points each for the Knights, which lost in spite of controlling the boards 37-29.

In the consolation game, the Knights would build an early 12 point lead and never look back beating the New England College Pilgrims 96-72. With the win Berkeley improves to 3-2 overall, while NEC is still in search of their first win of the season falling to 0-3 overall. Leading the way for Berkeley once again was Stable, who led all scorers with 27 points to go along with nine rebounds and five assists. Williams chipped in 20 points and seven rebounds and sophomore center Elijah Craig (Seward Park/Brooklyn, NY) added 17 points, seven rebounds, and six blocks for the Knights.

The Knights improve to 3-2 on the season. They head to the Hamilton College Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, November 26 and 27.

WOMEN STUN USMMA

The New York women's basketball team exacted some revenge last night, defeating United States Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 49 to 44 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Last season the Knights lost to USMMA by a score of 71 to 47.

Inside and out, Berkeley women’s basketball is proving to be difficult to beat at the start of the 2011-2012 season. USMMA threw just about everything they had at Berkeley, but junior forward Taisha Sherman (Vanguard/New York, NY) was just too much.

Sherman sparked the Knights (2-0) with 24 points on 8-for-18 shooting from the field while sinking 8 of 12 shots from the foul line. Freshman guard Janay Thomas (Longwood/Queens, NY)and junior guard Oliva Byfield (Washington Irving/Queens, NY) contributed eight points apiece. Sophomore center Rahinet Koti (Walton/Bronx, NY) was a force to be reckoned with on the inside, grabbing 10 rebounds and blocking three shots.

The game was a back-and-forth affair in the opening half. The Knights took the lead for good at 13-12 on Toliglhia Archer basket with 4:59 left in the first half, although the Merchant Marines kept within striking distance. The Mariners trailed for the entire second half, but came within 33-32 on a basket with 10:46 remaining in the game. But the Knights went on a 12-5 run to extend their lead to 45-37 with 4:52 left.

The Merchant Marines rallied back on a 7-2 spurt of their own, pulling within 47-44 with 11 seconds remaining before Sherman sank two free throws to ice the game.

Berkeley will be back in action on November 18th against Umass-Boston in the Umass Tip-Off Classic.

LEHMAN COMEBACK STUNS KNIGHTS

The Berkeley College New York men’s basketball team held the lead against the Lehman College Lightning for the entire game - except the final 4.6 seconds as the Lightning hit two free throws to stun the Knights 72-71 in a non-conference matchup held at John Jay College.

Berkeley (2-1, 0-0) quickly established itself in the opening minutes by scoring the first ten points of the contest, six of those points coming from three jumpers by center Elijah Craig (Seward Park/Brooklyn, NY). The Lightning (1-0, 0-0) would recover to pull within three, yet Berkeley continued to maintain their lead. With a 29-19 edge with 6:33 to play in the first half, Kaseem Williams (Boys and Girls/Brooklyn, NY) hit a three from the corner, and two buckets from Craig and Jose Stable (EBC HS for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) ended a 7-0 run to increase the Berkeley lead to 17 at 36-19. The Lightning closed out the half on a 12-5 run to cut the lead to 10 at halftime 41-31.

The Knights would continue to lead the entire second half, but Lehman slowly and steadily crawled back into the game until the final dramatic closing seconds. With Berkeley clinging to a one-point lead, 71-70, with 6.4 seconds remaining, Lehman forced a turnover from the inbound play and converted two free throws on the other end to take their first lead of the game 72-71. A last second three-pointer fell short at the buzzer as the Knights were handed in crushing fashion their first loss after opening the season with two straight wins.

Stable led the Knights with 21 points while Craig added 13 points and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds while sophomore Jovan Bovell (Jamaica/Jamaica, NY) chipped in 12 points for their efforts in the defeat.

Berkeley looks to rebound itself this Friday, November 18th, at 7PM against Lesley University (Mass) in the second game of the New England College Tournament. The New York men's soccer team defeated Yeshiva University on Sunday by a score of 8 to 1 to end the season at 10-9-2, their second straight season with a better than .500 record.

The Knights got on the board early with freshman midfielder Dare Aniyikaye scoring with only 2:44 into the game. It was a lead the Knights would not relinquish, with quick scores from junior forward Guillermo Moscoso, sophomore defender Ulises Bravo, senior midfielder Patrik Lundberg, and a second goal by Aniyikaye to give the Knights a commanding 5-0 halftime lead.

Sophomore midfielder Daisei Hiwaki would extend the lead to six with a goal seven minutes into the second half, followed by a goal from junior midfielder Claes Magnusson before Yeshiva responded with a goal of its own to make it 7-1.

Junior defender and captain, Yhonnier Montoya, would complete the scoring. Hiwaki would finish the game with a goal and six assists.

WOMEN OPEN SEASON WITH A WIN

The Berkeley College New York women’s basketball team opened the 2011-2012 season on a positive note with a hard earned 51-44 victory over host Manhattan Community College in the season opener for both teams.

The first half began as a low scoring affair with both teams struggling to find their offense. Then with 5:40 remaining in the half with Berkeley up by a single basket at 12-10, the Knights (1-0, 0-0) would close out the half on a 12-4 run. Junior forward/center Janay Collins (Bronx Guild/Bronx, NY) led the charge with 8 of the 12 points as Berkeley took a 24-14 lead into halftime.

The Knights would expand their lead in the second half by using their full court press to harrass the Lady Panthers (0-1, 0-0) causing numerous turnovers. Junior guard Savasia Caraballo (John F. Kennedy/Bronx, NY) contributed 4 free throws and 2 steals during a 12-6 run to increase the Berkeley lead to sixteen at 36-20. The Knights would maintain their double-digit lead for most of the remaining second half until a late Panther run would reduce the final margin to 7. Collins led all scorers with 23 points.

The Knights' next game will be Wednesday, November 16, at 7 P.M. against the United States Merchant Marine Academy.

NEW JERSEY SPLITS AT MAINE

The New Jersey men's basketball team split two games at the USCAA Tip-Off Tournament at Southern Maine Community College this past weekend.

The Knights lost the first game to Central Maine Community College by a score of 74 to 68. The Knights led 36 to 35 at halftime before poor foul shooting plagued them for the second game in a row, shooting only 57% for the game.

The Knights were led by sophomore forward Andrew Webber (Thomas Worthington/Columbus, OH) with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Freshman forward Davonn Boyd (Kearny Christian Academy/Newark, NJ) and sophomore center Terah Mingo (Kearny Christian Academy/Newark, NJ) both scored 12 points, respectively.

The Knights would secure their first win of the season the next day against Southern Maine by a score of 69 to 64 to improve their record to 1-2 on the season.

The Knights managed to put four players in double figures with Webber once again leading all scorers with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

The Knights now travel to New Hampshire for their second straight tournament of the season.

The New York men's basketball team won their 2nd Annual Berkeley College Invitational, defeating Vaughn College for the second straight year in the championship game.

The Vaughn College Warriors put a scare into the Knights in the first half trailing by only eight points going into halftime, 34 to 26. The Knights, however, would respond with a tough full court press and take advantage of their speed and length to outscore the Warriors by 30 points in the second half.

The Knights were led by All-American forward Jose Stable (EBC for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY), who scored 22 points while adding 7 assists to lead the team in both categories. Fellow All-American center Elijah Craig (Seward Park/Brooklyn, NY) would add 20 points while grabbing a game high 18 rebounds and adding 6 blocks and sophomore shooting guard Jovan Bovell (Jamaica/Jamaica, NY) would catch on fire in the second half by hitting four consecutive three point shots to push the lead for the Knights.

The Knights would shoot 50% from the field for the game while dominating on the boards 45 to 27 over the Warriors.

The win puts the Knights record to 2-0 on the season. They face Lehman College on November 15 at 5 P.M.

The New York men's basketball team defeated The New School today by a score of 95 to 46 in the first round of the 2nd Annual Berkeley College Invitational.

The Knights started off slowly before their full court press turned the tide midway through the first period, giving the Knights a 41 to 21 lead heading into halftime.

The Knights were led by All-American sophomore forward Jose Stable (EBC for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) who led all scorers with 25 points while adding 9 rebounds in 31 minutes. Freshman forward Danzel Whyte (Teachers Preparatory/Brooklyn, NY) made his presence known with 17 points and a game high 13 rebounds in only 22 minutes. Junior guard Kaseem Williams (Boys and Girls/Brooklyn, NY) added 15 points and 5 steals.

New School was led by freshman guard Dustin Sodano with 19 points and 5 assists.

For the game the Knights shot 63% from the floor compared to New School's 31%.

Berkeley will compete against Vaughn College in a repeat of last year's championship game at 2 P.M. Vaughn defeated Pratt Institute 71 to 49 in the first game. Pratt will compete against The New School in the consolation game at noon.

The United States Collegiate Athletic Association announced its list of All-Americans today for soccer and five Berkeley College athletes were listed among them.

Freshman forward David Mugenga was named Honorable Mention All-American for his team-leading 17 goals, putting him among the national leaders. Four additional Knights were named to the National Academic All-American team for their exemplary academic achievement. They are junior midfielder Claes Magnusson, junior defender and captain Yhonnier Montoya, sophomore midfielder Joel Yawili, and sophomore defender Paul Logan.

NJ BASKETBALL HOSTS HOME GAME

The New Jersey men's basketball team held their first home game in program history on Tuesday, welcoming USCAA rival Central Penn College to the Fleischer Center on the campus of NJIT.

Central Penn came into the game defending an impressive 18-9 record in 2010 and the game was tightly contested throughout the first half, with Central Penn taking a 40 to 35 lead into the locker rooms.

Poor foul shooting would doom the Knights in the second half as they failed to capitalize on early foul troubles for Penn, shooting just 47.2% for the game, 17 for 36. Penn would push out to a commanding 15 point lead before the Knights would cut it back down to 9 midway through the second half. Penn, however, would capitalize where the Knights couldn't, at the free throw line, shooting an impressive 80.6% from the line in the second half converting 25 of 31 free throw attempts to secure the win, 93 to 77.

The Knights were led by center Terah Mingo (Kearny Christian/Newark, NJ) with 20 points and 4 rebounds and forward Davonn Boyd (Kearny Christian/Newark, NJ) with 11 points.

The New York men's soccer team lost to the Culinary Institute of America in the Hudson Valley Conference semifinals 2 to 0 last night as they failed to defend their 2010 HVMAC Championship.

The loss dropped the Knights to 9-9-2 on the season with one game remaining against Yeshiva University on Sunday, November 13.

Culinary will face Albany College of Pharmacy in the finals at Culinary this Saturday.

The New York men's basketball team regained its winning form last season by capturing its fourth Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) Championship in six seasons and, in its first season of competition, finishing a respectable fifth place in the United State Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Division II National Basketball Tournament.

The team’s nineteen victories in twenty-six games represented an astonishing basketball record under head coach Chris Christiansen, now entering his 15th season at the helm of the Knights. For 2011-2012 his team will look to scale even higher expectations in both defending their HVMAC title and competing once again in the USCAA national basketball championship in March. Coach Christiansen believes that “the greatest results in life are achieved by determination, perseverance, and a perpetual passion to succeed”.

This season looms to be both promising and challenging for Berkeley. The Knights will return nine players from last year’s team, including three of their All-Americans, giving the team much needed experience as it will face its most difficult schedule in team history: twelve NCAA Division III teams are on the slate, including a matchup against last year’s USCAA Division I national champion Southern Virginia University.

Much of Berkeley’s success for the upcoming season will fall upon the shoulders of its returning All-American trio of Jose Stable, Elijah Craig, and Kaseem Williams. A 6-4 guard/forward, Stable (EBC HS for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) had a spectacular rookie campaign, winning HVMAC Rookie of the Week five times and USCAA Co-Player of the Week honors three times. He also led the team in scoring (19.9 points per game) and rebounding (11.7 rebounds per game) while shooting a blistering 61% from the field, tying him for first in the USCAA Division II national ranking.

Craig (Seward Park/Brooklyn, NY), a 6-8 sophomore, was an imposing and intimidating figure on the inside, finishing second in rebounds (11.0 rebounds per game), first in blocked shots (2.7 blocks per game), and double-doubles with 15.

Rounding out the trio is Williams (Boys & Girls/Brooklyn, NY). A 6-0 junior, Williams led his team in assists (4.0 assists per game) and steals (3.4 steals per game), and while mainly setting up his teammates for scoring chances, he remained a scoring threat with a 11.7 points per game average while shooting at a 49% clip.

Guard Stanley Hamp (Nazareth/Brooklyn, NY), the team’s lone senior, brings veteran gamesmanship and prowess to a squad featuring nine freshmen and sophomores. Among the returning underclassmen, sophomore Jovan Bovell (Jamaica/Jamaica, NY) contributed significantly in his rookie season, finishing second in scoring at 12.6 points per game and received the Most Valuable Player of the 2011 HVMAC championship tournament. Bovell will be counted on further to fill an even stronger leadership role on the floor this season. Sophomore guard Mario Guzman (West Oaks Academy/New York, NY) and junior guard Richard Rampersad (Herbert H. Lehman/Bronx, NY), can be expected to bring depth and sound fundamentals each time they step onto the hardwood.

Three freshmen join the Knights this season, each one bringing a diverse uniqueness that will give the Knights even more weapons at their arsenal. Danzel Whyte (Teachers Preparatory/Brooklyn, NY) is a bruising 6-4 forward whose ability allows him to play physically inside as well as display a soft touch from the outside. Jerrell Hampton (Queens Vocational & Technical/Astoria, NY) is a versatile 6-2 swingman who brings explosive athleticism to court that opponents will find hard to defend. Rounding out the freshmen is Hector Navarro (Wilby/New York, NY), a fiery 5-10 guard from Connecticut who possesses a shooter’s touch and a level of intensity that will surely prove to wreak havoc on opponents. Second-year forward Yang Zhang (Kumming China) and sophomore guard Alexander Loniakan (Frolunda Gym Sweden) further contribute to the overall success through their hard work and intensity.

The Knights open up the 2011-2012 regular season on November 5th at Borough of Manhattan Community College against the New School of Research in the 2nd Annual Berkeley Invitational. Key early season games include Lehman College (October 15th) and tournaments at New England College (November 18-19) and Hamilton College (November 26-27). Following the holiday break, the Knights will be further tested in tournaments at DeSales University (January 3-4) and NHTI (January 7-8) and a rematch against Brooklyn College on February 6. As part of Berkeley’s seven game home slate are HVMAC rivals St. Joseph’s (January 21), Vaughn College (February 11), and Southern Virginia University (February 25).

The New York women's soccer team, in their inaugural season, have fought their way to the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference championship game by defeating Sarah Lawrence College in a shoot out.

The Knights scored first on sophomore forward Ellinor Simonsson's first goal of the season. The Gryphons would tie the match and send it into overtime in the second half. Both teams would fail to score in both overtimes, resulting in a shoot out.

The Knights scored on their first three attempts on shots by Tiffanie Vargas (Environmental Sciences/New York, NY), Taryia Hollins (Mountain View/Triangle, VA), and Karol Scott-Tracy (Kristiansand Katedralskole, Grimle, Norway) while goalkeeper Lauga Oskarsdottir (Wang Toppidrettsgymnas/Reykjavik, Iceland) blanked the Gryphons on their first three attempts to secure the win.

The New York men's soccer team finished their regular season strong, defeating Cooper Union by a score of 7-0 to secure the #2 seed in the HVMAC playoffs starting this Saturday.

Freshman forward Andrew Levy led the way with two early goals followed by a quick third goal from fellow freshman forward David Mugenga to give the Knights a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.

Two second half goals by junior forward Philip Kim, a second goal from Mugenga, and a goal by freshman midfielder Dare Aniyikaye closed the scoring. Junior midfielder Claes Magnusson secured four assists and goalkeepers Camilo Montes and Jonathan Graneros shared the shutout.

The win improved the Knights record to 9-8-2 on the season and a second straight one-loss conference regular season record at 6-1. The Knights will now prepare to defend their 2010 HVMAC Championship as they face Culinary Institute of America in the semifinals this Saturday at 4:30 P.M. at Aviator Sports Complex in Brooklyn.

CELIN FINISHES FIFTH AT HVWAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Freshman women's cross country runner Sarah Celin finished in fifth place overall at the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference championships on Sunday, the best finish of any runner in Berkeley College history.

Celin finished in 22.43 for a pace of 7.19 per mile.

In addition to Celin, Rebecca Pettersson finished 45th, Winsong Mott finished 56th and Mayra Garcia finished 57th.

On the men's side, freshmen Jossue Figueroa finished in 40th place with a time of 38.43 and Gabriel Joseph finished in 46th place.

NEW JERSEY DEFEATS VALLEY FORGE

The New Jersey men's soccer team is ending their season strong, with wins in three of their last five matches.

The team continued their strong play with a 2-0 win over Valley Forge Christian College on Monday to improve their record to 5-11 on the season. It's the third shutout of the season for the team.

The Knights got on the board early off of a header by junior defender Edu Bennett (Bloomfield HS (CT)/East Orange, NJ) to take the 1-0 lead. Shortly thereafter freshman midfielder Eucario Solano (Absegami HS/Galloway, NJ) gave the Knights a two-goal advantage that would hold for the rest of the game. Freshman keeper Jesus Solis earned the shutout, his second of the season.

The New York women's soccer team made history on Saturday by defeating York College 1-0 for the first intercollegiate women's soccer victory in Berkeley College history.

The women were outnumbered 11 to 9 by late in the second half when Taryia Hollins bent a shot off of a foul to the corner of the net to secure the first win in Knights history.

The win improved the team record to 1-3-1 on the season. The team now competes this Thursday against Sarah Lawrence for a chance to compete in the Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference final. The Gryphons defeated the Knights 2-1 in OT just two weeks ago.

The Knights would take the early lead on a goal by freshman forward David Mugenga on an assist from fellow freshman forward Andrew Levy. The Oaks would respond with an early second half goal to tie the game on a free kick from the left corner.

The men's teams began the day with sophomore midfielder Daisei Hiwaki scoring on a direct kick from about 20 yards out to give the Knights the early 1-0 lead in the first half. The Knights would fail to convert on several more chances before the end of the half with the wind at their back that would prove costly later.

The Albany Panthers would quickly erase the deficit in the second half with only four minutes gone past on a shot to the left post. The teams would remain tied through regulation as well as for all but thirty seconds remaining in the first overtime when the Panthers would steal the ball deep in Knights territory and ricochet a shot off the left goal post to win the match 2 to 1. The loss drops the Knights back to .500 on the season at 7-7-1 and marks their first conference loss of the season. The team is now 3-1 in conference play.

The women next entertained the Panthers in the afternoon and had to start facing the heavy winds at Aviator yet managed to get through the first half only down 3-0 with the Panthers scoring two of those goals on corner kicks aided by the wind. The Panthers would score three more times in the second half for the 6-0 win. The loss dropped the Lady Knights to 0-3-1 on the season.

Both teams return to action this Wednesday.

The New York men's soccer team survived a lackluster performance to edge rejuvenated conference opponent Sarah Lawrence College 2-1 in double overtime.

The Knights dominated possession early and sophomore midfielder Daisei Hiwaki struck a loose ball in the Sarah Lawrence penalty box beating the keeper in the inside post to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.

The Knights failed to take advantage to extend the lead in the first half and the Gryphons opened the second half by quickly capitalizing on a defensive error after a wayward clearance by sophomore keeper Camilo Montes in the Berkeley goal, to equalize from 25 yards out. Berkeley responded with a fury, but failed to convert on several opportunities.

Sarah Lawrence was given a golden chance to seal the victory in the 67th minute, but was stopped on a penalty kick by Montes. Berkeley kept failing to convert chances until the second overtime period when sophomore midfielder Joel Yawili managed to find the net for the victory.

The win puts the Knights over the .500 mark for the first time this season at 7-6-1 and maintains their undefeated conference record at 4-0. A mark that will be sorely tested by Albany Pharmacy on Saturday. Albany comes into the match at 6-2-1 and 3-0 in the conference.

CELIN FINISHES SIXTH

Freshman women's cross country runner Sarah Celin finished in sixth place overall at the College of Staten Island Invitational on Sunday. The CSI Invitational was the first meet of the year for the Knights and the highest finish of any runner in Berkeley College's brief history. Celin finished in 23.33.

On the men's side, freshman Jossue Figueroa finished in 57th place with a time of 33.24.

The New York women's soccer teams lost a close match to Sarah Lawrence College on Sunday by a score of 2 to 1. The loss drops the Knights to 0-2-1 on the season.

Senior forward Tiffanie Vargas scored the first goal on an assist by sophomore forward Karol Scott-Tracy in the early minutes of the match. Danielle Schnaider would score on a free kick from 25 yards out only to have the goal nullified by offsides. This would prove pivotal later as the Gryphons would steal the ball in the Knights backfield and score to tie the match 1-1.

Sarah Lawrence would win the match with only a minute and fifteen seconds remaining.

The Knights return to action this Saturday against powerhouse Albany College of Pharmacy.

The New Jersey men's soccer team saw their losing streak reach six games losing to Centenary College 7 to 0 Wednesday in Hackettstown, N.J. It was their first game without freshman goalkeeper Thomas Frangieh (Newton HS/Newton, NJ), who broke his leg against Marywood University four days earlier and was having a standout rookie year.

The Cyclones outshot the Knights, 23-10, including an 11-3 edge in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Jason Rogers (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills) posted three saves for his program-leading 16th-career shutout.

Leading 2-0 at halftime, Centenary turned on the jets in the second half pushing the lead to 5-0 within the first 20 minutes of the second half.

The Knights return to action against Penn State Brandywine on Friday.

KNIGHTS DEFEAT NHTI

The New York men's soccer team defeated New Hampshire Technical Institute 3 to 1 on Saturday to even their record at 6-6-1 on the season. The Lynx came in to the game as the 13th ranked team in the USCAA.

It was the second time the two programs have met, with the Knights defeating the Lynx in overtime last year in New Hampshire.

Berkeley controlled most of the play, finally breaking through at the 20th minute with a goal by freshman forward David Mugenga on an assist by junior Claes Magnuson. The Knights would strike again on a goal by freshman forward Andrew Levy to make it 2-0 at the half.

The Lynx responded with a goal by Chris Woolsey to keep the visitors in the match. Less than three minutes later, however, the Knights responded with Levy's second goal of the game, nicely tacking the ball under the keeper to secure the Berkeley win.

The Knights now face conference foe St Lawrence on Wednesday, October 12th.

WOMEN LOSE TO BERGEN

The New York women's soccer team lost 9-0 to Bergen Community College yesterday, only the second varsity intercollegiate game in the program's history. After tying Yeshiva University 2-2 earlier in the season, hopes were high as the Knights met the Bulldogs.

However, superior numbers on the Bulldogs part led the way and despite a rebounding second half, the Knights couldn't stop the bleeding.

The Knights continue their inaugural season against the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons on Saturday at 1 P.M. The Gryphons are also in their first season and are a conference opponent.

MEN TIE BROOKLYN

In a tale of two-halves, freshman forward David Mugenga scored in the 2nd minute and again in the 15th minute to give the Knights an early 2-0 lead against Brooklyn College. And until half-time it looked as if it would be enough for Berkeley to reach the .500 mark for the season.

The picture changed suddenly and dramatically with the start of the second half. Brooklyn College came out with more belief and determination and put immediate pressure on the Knights. Sophomore keeper Camilo Montes (Bayside/Bayside, NY) made a good stop from close range in the 50th minute and junior defender Yhonnier Montoya (Lyndhurst/Lyndhurst, NJ) cleared off the line to temporarily keep the Knight's clean sheet.

But the Bridges would keep up the pressure and scored two almost identical goals within 10 minutes - pouncing on close range rebounds - to even the score at the hour-mark.

Berkeley NY reawakened to retake control of the tempo, but could not create enough to capitalize through the overtime. The Knights' record now stands at 5-6-1. They face USCAA #13 ranked foe, NHTI, Saturday 9 am at Randall's Island.

BRIARCLIFFE SWEEPS BERKELEY

In what was a close match until the final ten minutes, the New Jersey men's soccer team lost to Widener University by a score of 5-1 on Wednesday.

Widener held a 2-0 lead at the half, but the Knights would bounce back on a goal by freshman Tyler Malkenson at the 57th minute to get within one. The Knights would fail to convert on multiple opportunities to tie the game before two quick goals by the Pride in a twelve minute span put the game out of reach.

The loss drops the Knights to 2-8 on the season.

SOCCER TEAMS SUFFER 1-0 DEFEATS

Competing in the same town on the same night for the first time in their brief histories, both the New York and New Jersey men's soccer teams suffered 1-0 defeats Tuesday night.

The New Jersey squad competed first against perennial powerhouse Drew University in Madison, NJ, and kept the match tight throughout. A late first half goal by the Rangers would make all the difference despite quality opportunities for the Knights to tie in the first and second halves. The loss dropped the team to 2-7 on the season.

The New York squad's three game winning streak ended at FDU-Florham across the street from the Drew-Berkeley match.

The Devils scored with a well placed header with 14 minutes to play after a neat counter-attack. Berkeley started lethargically after a ten day layoff due to their postponed match at NJCU, and never got into full gear. Still, the Knights had their chances both before and after the lone goal of the game, but failed to convert any of them.

Camillo Montes had another brilliant night in the New York net, making three fantastic stops to keep the score at 0-0. The loss dropped the team to 4-5 on the season.

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team improved to 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference with their third straight win, a 7-0 victory over Vaughn College on Wednesday.

The outcome was settled after two early penalties converted by freshman forward Andrew Levy and sophomore defender Ifeanyi Ekwermuba sported the Knights a 2-0 lead.

Ekwermuba also closed out the scoring in the 60th minute when he slotted home a through ball from junior midfielder Sebastian Cruz.

In between, freshman forward David Mugenga scored twice, Levy notched his second, and junior defender Yhonnier Montoya scored his first goal of the season on a direct free kick.

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team rebounded from tough losses in two opening season tournaments to improve to 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in the Conference by defeating the St. Joseph's College Bears 11-3 Wednesday night.

Following a lackluster first half performance, the Knights opened the second half with an eye pleasing barrage of 5 goals in 15 minutes to take a commanding lead against their archrival. It was both teams HVMAC Conference opener and St Joseph's first ever varsity soccer intercollegiate match.

Freshman forward David Mugenga scored a Berkeley College rookie record 6 goals for the Knights despite an amazing performance by the St Joseph's goalkeeper who made a string of fine saves in the Bear's soccer debut.

Junior Guillermo Moscoso opened the scoring for Berkeley with a well timed header at the far post, followed by Mugenga's first of the night after he latched on to a rebound inside the six yard box. The Bears bounced right back with a goal of their own before sophomore Joel Yawili made it 3-1. The first half finished 4-2, as the teams traded goals.

Other Berkeley NY scorers on the night were senior Patrick Lundberg-Munoz, freshman Tashorn Clarke, and freshman Dare Aniyikaye.

Berkeley College will be fielding a varsity men's volleyball team for the first time in College history in 2011-2012 with a women's program scheduled to begin in Fall 2012.

"We are extremely excited about adding men's volleyball and we are looking forward to adding women's in Fall 2012 as well," said Brian Maher, athletic director of Berkeley College.

Both squads will be led by head coach Brian Honsberger, a graduate of the Rutgers-Newark NCAA Division I program a few years back.

"Coach Honsberger not only brings a ton of experience, but he has played at the very highest level of collegiate volleyball in the nation and knows what it will take to get us to that level."

Recruiting has gone well in the first year, says Maher, and he expects the teams to do well in their inaugural seasons. Both programs will compete as members of the Hudson Valley Men's and Women's Athletic Conferences and the men's team will also be competing against the top club teams in the Northeast in the form of Temple University, Dartmouth University, and R.I.T. to name a few.

BERKELEY SHINES AT USCAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Berkeley College New York men's basketball team earned a trip the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships in their first year as a member. The team entered the championships as the fourth ranked team in the nation and lost a heartbreaking opening round game to Andrews University of Ohio in overtime 62 to 61! Andrews would go on to win the national championship.

The team would bounce back to win three consecutive games defeating Penn State University - Fayette, Vermont Tech, and Southern Maine to secure fifth place overall in the tournament.

BERKELEY STARTS WRESTLING IN NEW JERSEY

Berkeley College began a new era in athletics this week with the formation of a wrestling team. Berkeley has never fielded a wrestling team before.

"We are excited at the opportunity to develop a wrestling program," said Brian Maher, athletic director of Berkeley College. "Few colleges in New Jersey offer it and I am confident that not only will we fill a need, but that we'll be competitive in a very short period of time."

The program trains at Extreme Fight Club in Woodland Park, a mere 1/8 of a mile from the front entrance of the campus.

After a disheartening first round loss, the men's basketball team bounced back with a decisive 84 to 67 victory over Penn State Fayette at the USCAA National Championships on Thursday. Freshman center and Honorable Mention All-American Elijah Craig led all scorers with 29 points while grabbing 12 rebounds. All-American Jose Stable added 16 points and 20 rebounds.

The New York men's basketball team earned their fourth Hudson Valley Conference postseason championship on Sunday after defeating archrival St. Joseph's College by a score of 91 to 62 in the championship game. It was the sixth time the two programs had met in the finals with the Knights winning four of the six.

The men defeated Albany Pharmacy in the semifinals by a score 91 to 81 to manage 91 points in both contests.

The Knights were led by forward Jose Stable (EBC High School for Public Service/Brooklyn) with 19 points and 20 rebounds and guard Jovan Bovell (Jamaica/Jamaica) who would earn MVP honors and would lead all scorers with 22 points after dropping 25 in the semifinals. Freshman center Elijah Craig (Seward Park/Brooklyn) would add 22 points and 15 boards in the semis.

The Knights led at the half by eight, 42 to 34, but would go on to hit 5 of 9 from three-point range in the second half and shoot more than 60% for the game to take a commanding lead and cruise to their fourth title. The Knights outrebounded the Bears 50 to 28 to dominate the boards.

The Knights now head to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships in Uniontown, PA.

The New York women's basketball team accomplished something no other basketball or soccer program has ever done in Berkeley College history Monday night and that was to lead a member of the powerful NJAC Conference at halftime. The Knights played inspired basketball to enter the half with a 22 to 21 lead over NJCU. It was the latest in a series of firsts for the first-year program.

Berkeley was led by 6-foot-2 freshman center Rahinet Koti (Bronx, NY/Walton), who finished with 15 rebounds (10 defensive), seven points, six blocks and two steals in 35 minutes before fouling out. She had nine rebounds in the first half.

Also for the Knights, sophomore guard Olivia Byfield (Queens, NY/Washington Irving) tallied 14 points and nine rebounds (eight defensive), with eight points and six rebounds in the first half. Freshman guard Linda Staples (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) added 12 points (5-14 FG, 2-5 3FG), collecting eight points and five caroms in the opening half.

Berkeley scored 11 of the final 15 points of the first half to claim its first lead of the game with 1:21 remaining and led at the break, 22-21.

Staples jumper at 18:39 of the second half gave BC a three-point lead (24-21) before NJCU scored seven straight for a 28-24 lead. With NJCU ahead 28-26 with 15:35 remaining, the Knights amassed a 12-3 run to build a double-digit, 40-29 lead. Back-to-back baskets by Clark capped the run. Berkeley could not draw closer than nine the remainder of the game with the final score NJCU 60, Berkeley 47.

NEW YORK WINS HVMAC REGULAR SEASON

For the first time in program history, the New York men's basketball team has gone undefeated in Hudson Valley Conference play to secure the regular season conference championship.

The Knights went 6-0 in conference play and secured the #1 seed in the upcoming conference postseason. The Knights defeated Vaughn College and Sarah Lawrence College this past weekend to complete the undefeated conference regular season while also recording their eighth and ninth consecutive victories, the longest win streak in program history.

The came was close throughout with the Knights down by five at the half, 42-37. The most either team led was by ten with Lehman reaching that mark with eleven minutes remaining in the game 59-49. The Knights would respond with an 8-0 run to pull within two, but would get no closer.

The Knights were led by sophomore guard Gary Williams, Jr. with 21 points. Freshman forward Andrew Webber led the team with 7 rebounds and junior Andre Javis and freshman Donovan Wrice each had 2 blocks.

The loss dropped the Knights to 2-11 on the season. They next play at Valley Forge Military College this Friday at 6 P.M.

NEW YORK DEFEATS ST. JOE'S

Berkeley College's New York men's basketball team was 0-10 all-time in the regular season against archrival St. Joseph’s before their matchup Saturday evening in Brooklyn. All that changed when the Knights defeated the Bears 70-69 in a hard fought down-to-the wire conference game.

Berkeley entered the game as the 4th ranked team in the USCAA and St. Joseph’s as the 20th ranked team. Winners of six straight, the Knights got off to a strong start with a 12-point lead at the half. However, nothing ever comes easy when these two teams meet and were it not for the heroic efforts of sophomore guard Kaseem Williams, who went 8 for 9 in the second half scoring 17 of the team's 32 second half points, including the last 11 of the game, the Knights might have ended up 0-11.

Williams led Berkeley with a game-high 21 points and Elijah Craig finished with a game-high 19 rebounds to go along with 12 points for a double-double. Jose Stable, Jovan Bovell, and Damir Redzepagic each had 10+ points for the Knights, who improved to 12-6, 4-0 HVMAC and next play Vaughn College on Saturday, February 5 at 1 P.M. at Borough of Manhattan Community College.

The New York men's basketball team continued their winning ways by defeating Queensborough Community College by a score of 87-64. Forward Jose Stable led the Knights with 24 points while pulling down seven boards while center Elijah Craig posted his sixth double-double of the season with 21 points and 11 rebounds and guard Jovan Bovell chipped in with 16 points.

On Sunday, January 16 the Knights defeated the Albany College of Pharmacy Panthers 82-57 improving their record to 10-6 and 2-0 in the Hudson Valley Conference. The Knights were again led by Jose Stable and Jovan Bovell. Stable posted his eighth double-double of the season with 21 points and a team high 17 rebounds while Bovell added 20 points off the bench.

The Berkeley Knights next game is at Pratt Institute on Sunday, January 23 at 12 noon.

BERKELEY WINS NHTI TOURNAMENT

At Concord , NH this past weekend, the New York men's basketball team won the NHTI New Year’s Tip-Off men’s basketball tournament for the first time in three years. In the opening game against host NHTI (ranked #6 in the USCAA), the Knights overwhelmed the home team 85-45 to advance to the championship game against the University of Maine-Augusta. Berkeley followed up with an equally impressive 75-48 victory to secure the tournament championship. Overall, the Knights improved their record to 8-6 and currently own a modest three-game winning streak.

Freshman forward Jose Stable (Brooklyn, NY/EBC HS for Public Service), named as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, posted consecutive double-doubles with a 23 point-14 rebound performance against NHTI and then a 19 point-11 rebound effort against UMA. Freshman center Elijah Craig ( Brooklyn , NY /Seward Park) averaged 10 points and four blocks, while pulling down 19 rebounds total for both games and was named to the All-Tournament team. Honorable mention also goes out to freshman guard Jovan Bovell ( Jamaica , NY/Jamaica) who averaged 15 points per game for the weekend.

KNIGHTS RUN OUT OF GAS AGAINST GULLS

The Berkeley College New York men's basketball team, reeling from a tough overtime loss the night before against Gordon College, lost to Endicott College by a score of 94-80.

The Knights fall to 5-6 on the season with the loss.

Early in the first half, Berkeley jumped out to a 12-6 advantage behind six points from Knights leading scorer Jose Stable (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Berkeley continued to control the pace of the game, stretching their first half lead to as large as 14 points at 31-17 with 8:36 remaining until halftime. Stable netted 12 of his game-high 24 points in the opening stanza while teammates Jovan Bovell (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Damir Redzepagic (Bronx, N.Y.) each scored six points to lead the offense.

Down 14 in the first half, Endicott got their offense back on track and outscored Berkeley 36-10 to hold a 45-41 halftime advantage.

In the second half, Endicott's bench came alive and the Blue and Green held a lead as large as 12 points midway through the second half before eventually stretching it to 14 in the final moments of the game.

Berkeley's Bovell came off the bench to score 15 points on 5-of-8 from beyond the arc and sophomore guard Kaseem Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists in the losing effort. Stable's 10 rebounds were also a game-high to help the freshman reach a double-double.

Berkeley outrebounded Endicott 45-35, including 16 offensive boards leading to 10 second chance points. The Knights play at home this Sunday against Culinary Institute of America to begin Conference play.

NEW YORK LOSES HEARTBREAKER

The Berkeley College New York men's basketball team failed to hold a double-digit second half lead and eventually lost in overtime to Gordon College 87-81. The loss dropped the Knights to 5-5 on the season.

Down 52-40 with 12:40 to play, Gordon rallied to send the game into overtime. Gordon took the lead in regulation at 71-69 with 30 seconds left before Kaseem Williams (22 points) sank a layup to even the score and send the game into overtime.

The Knights then went up 74-71 to start the extra frame when Damir Redzepagic sank a free throw and made a layup, but Gordon fought back with a decisive 9-2 run putting Gordon up 80-76 with 1:50 to go.

The Knights were led by Redzepagic with 23 points and Jose Stable with 13 rebounds.

NEW JERSEY POSTS SECOND WIN OF SEASON

Berkeley College's New Jersey men's basketball team posted their second win of the season to improve their record to 2-6 behind sophomore power forward Justin Savage's (so. Newark, NJ/Kearny Christian Academy) first double-double of the season. Savage totaled 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds and was named to the All-Tournament team.

The team defeated Penn State Brandywine 64-62 in the consolation game of the Heritage’s Dairy Stores Classic at Rowan University. In the first round on Friday, Berkeley lost to Gwynedd-Mercy by a score of 86-57.

Berkeley was led by forward Andrew Webber (fr. Columbus, OH/Thomas Worthington) with 16 points and nine rebounds. Guards Gary Williams (so. Jersey City, NJ/Marist) and Brandon Stewart (fr. Somerville, NJ/Somerville) contributed with 12 points apiece. Williams also registered six boards, three assists and three steals. Guard Justin Lewandowski (sr. Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown Reg.) chipped in with nine points while forward Ramante Mosley (fr. Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) grabbed nine rebounds.

The Knights next play at Rutgers-Camden on Wednesday.

WOMEN WIN FIRST GAME

The New York women's basketball team made history Saturday night when they defeated Nashua Community College by a score of 48 to 44 for the first win in the program's history in their first intercollegiate season at the New Hampshire Technical Institute Tip-Off Tournament. The Knights face host NHTI Lynx in the championship game on Sunday.

The win improved the team's record to 1-3 after losses to perennial powerhouses Briarcliffe College, Sullivan County Community College, and Sussex County College.

NEW YORK LOSES BACK-TO-BACK HEARTBREAKERS

The New York men's basketball team lost back-to-back down-to-the-wire games at the 2010 Eastern Connecticut Tip-Off Tournament.

Eastern Connecticut led by as many as 18 late in the first half Friday and by 14 with eight minutes left in the game before the Berkeley Knights closed the gap to five with just over a minute left. Eastern missed ten of 29 free throws in the game but were 9-for-10 from the stripe inside the final minute to hold off the surging Knights.

Berkeley got a game-high 18 points from freshman Jose Stable and a game-high 14 rebounds from sophomore Damir Redzepagic.

In the consolation game, Berkeley lost to Emerson College by a score of 68 to 63 despite outrebounding Emerson 45-17. The Lions forced 28 turnovers, however and connected on 54.2 percent of their second-half shots. Jose Stable dominated play in the tournament for Berkeley with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Freshman center Elijah Craig had a game-high 20 points and 11 rebounds against Emerson, sinking nine of 11 field goals. The losses drop Berkeley to 3-3 on the season.

NY BASKETBALL SPLITS AT BMCC TOURNAMENT

The Berkeley College New York men's basketball team lost the first game of the Borough of Manhattan Community College tournament to Bergen Community College by a score of 86 to 81 before rebounding to defeat the host by a score of 81 to 62 to improve to 3-1 on the season.

Sophomore Damir Redzepagic (Cardinal Spellman/Bronx, NY) led all scorers with 20 points in the opening round loss to Bergen while also grabbing 11 rebounds.

Freshman Jose Stable (EBC HS for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) dominated the action in the game against Borough of Manhattan by leading all scorers with 32 points.

The Knights next compete at the Eastern Connecticut Tournament with Emerson College and SUNY Purchase.

BERKELEY WINS CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP

The Berkeley College New York men's soccer team capped off their most successful season to date with a 3-0 victory over Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in the Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference Championship game.

In only their third season of intercollegiate play, the team compiled a 12-6 record with historic wins over Brooklyn College, College of Staten Island, and City College of New York to name a few. The team finished the regular season with a 5-1 conference record, their only loss coming to Albany earlier in the year.

Christ Assou, Dela Wornawovor, and Philip Kim scored the goals while goalkeeper Lauga Oskarsdottir not only picked up another shutout on the season, but secured the Tournament Most Valuable Player award.

The team still has one game left on the schedule, a match against Yeshiva University on Sunday, November 14 at 8 P.M. at Tibbetts Brook Park.

The Berkeley Knights began their 2010-2011 season on a positive note with two strong victories in winning the inaugural Berkeley College Invitational men's basketball tournament.

In the opening game the Knights overpowered Pratt Institute 100-31 with five players finishing in double figures. Freshmen forward Jose Stable (EBC High School for Public Service/Brooklyn, NY) led all scorers with 16 points with freshmen center Elijah Craig (Seward Park/Brooklyn, NY) posting a double-double with 14 points, a team-high 13 rebounds, and three blocked shots.

In the championship game against Vaughn College (1-1), Berkeley (2-0) broke open a close game by going on a 17-5 run to close out the first half and led 49-31 at halftime. Freshman guard Jovan Bovell (Jamaica/Jamaica, NY) provided the spark off the bench with eight points and two steals. Bovell and Stable finished with 20 points each while sophomore guard Kaseem Williams (Boys & Girls/Brooklyn, NY) added 16 points. The final score for the game was Berkeley 93 and Vaughn College 72.

Two Knights earned all-tournament honors: Stable was named Most Outstanding Player and junior guard Isaiah Didier (Sheepshead Bay/Brooklyn, NY) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Berkeley's next games will be this upcoming weekend at the Borough of Manhattan Community College Tournament. Saturday, November 13, the Knights will face junior college powerhouse Bergen Community College at 12:30PM and on Sunday, November 14, will face host BMCC at 2:30PM. All games will be played at Borough of Manhattan Community College.

Berkeley College's New York men's soccer team defeated Cooper Union 2-0 today to earn their second consecutive Hudson Valley Men's Athletic Conference (HVMAC) championship berth.

Junior forward Alexis Monceaux, fresh off of being named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) Player of the Week, gave Berkeley the lead off of an assist from sophomore defender Jabneel Springer.

Freshman forward Lucas Pucheta added to the lead off of a pass from sophomore forward Guillermo Moscoso.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauga Oskarsdottir earned her fifth shutout of the season with three saves.

BERKELEY DEFEATS MOUNT ALOYSIUS

Berkeley College's New Jersey men's soccer team defeated Mount Aloysius today 3-0 to improve their record to 6-7 on the season.

The team was led by star freshman Ramon Arce who assisted on the first two goals and netted the third on a free kick. Senior Rakon Falah started the scoring by heading in a corner kick by Arce. Sophomore forward John Machado followed it up off a nice pass from Arce.

Senior goalkeeper Oscar Ortega earned his second consecutive win of the season.

The team has an opportunity to even their record when they play Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday, November 3.
